Precious Afghanistan
Precious Afghanistan will take place on the evening of Thursday, 15th March 2012 at Porchester Hall, W2. The evening will showcase jewellery by designers Sima Vaziry and Pippa Small.
Persian historian, Bijan Omrani will begin the evening with a journey along the Silk Road and beyond, highlighting the importance of many Afghan gemstones to kingdoms in Egypt and Gothic artwork.
Sophia Swire, former Senior Advisor on Gemstone Sector Development, Ministry of Mines, Kabul, will provide guests with a picture of modern lapis, emerald and sapphire mining along with what training is available for gemstone cutting in-country.
This star-studded evening will entertain guests with raw gemstone and jewellery displays as well as a traditional Afghan bazaar where clothing, carpets and other textiles will be available for purchase. Live music and traditional Afghan dance will also be performed.
Precious Afghanistan has the support of His Excellency, Dr Hameed Haami, Afghanistan's Charge d'affaires in London as well as Channel 4 news presenter Jon Snow and BBC Correspondent Lyse Doucet. Led by top models Olivia Inge along with Juste Juozapaityte and Jessica Abidde from Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model Series 7, the ordinary catwalk will be ditched and roam through the audience allowing guests to see up-close the stunning designs.
This charitable event is the innovation of Lady Bridget Cowper‐Coles, whose love of Afghan culture, fashion and design came through her travels to this magnificent country.
All proceeds from the evening will go to Afghanaid which has worked tirelessly in Afghanistan for 30 years, operating in some of the most remote and needy regions providing vital support for rural communities. www.afghanaid.org.uk
