Humanitarian Assistance in Afghanistan: Where to now?
Key note speaker, Lydia Geirsdottir, Humanitarian Reform Officer (Afghanistan), The Humanitarian Reform Project
Discussants: Wendy Fenton, HPN Coordinator, Humanitarian Policy Group ODI and Representative to be announced from DFId
Chair: Abdul Basir, Director BAAG (The British and Irish Agencies Afghanistan Group)
Having just emerged from a turbulent election period and with all eyes trained on its new Government, Afghanistan is at a critical juncture. Key international actors are more than ever speaking of the need to coordinate civilian and military activities to tackle the sources of the Afghan conflict. Humanitarian actors, many of whom have been in Afghanistan for decades, are trying to address the direct and indirect humanitarian consequences of conflict, displacement, and natural disasters. Despite the opening of an OCHA office in Afghanistan in January, important challenges remain for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. The panel discussion aims to unpack these challenges, particularly in terms of humanitarian access, and to discuss options for tackling them.
