The acclaimed Indian restaurant Babur will be celebrating the 525th of Babur - the first Mughal emperor- between Feb 15th - March 31st in a celebration of Afghan cuisine. Babur have kindly decided to give donations from their meals to support Afghanaid's work restoring orchards and bringing improved agriculture.

Babur spent the early years of his dynasty living in Afghanistan where he became a lifelong fan of it's flora. His passion for gardens was demonstrated by his constructing the beautiful Bagh-e-Babur garden in Kabul which is currently being renovated. Afghanistan was considered by many to be the 'garden of Asia', many fruits and nuts are thought to originate from here. For many centuries its orchards and fields have produced vegetables fruits and nuts that have been exported due to their high quality.

The last three decades however have seen the destruction of much of the infrastructure that supported Afghanistan's agricultural sector. Orchards and forests were levelled for firewood whilst complex irrigation channels were destroyed and farming knowledge and food diversity was lost. All these factors and more have had a massive detrimental impact on a country which as a subsistence economy relies heavily on agriculture.

Afghanaid has been working with rural communities for 25 years. Many of our projects focus on agriculture:
* We work with women to help construct Kitchen Gardens and teach them how to nurture and cultivate a variety of vegetables and fruits to improve their diets and provide a small surplus to sell within their community.
* We work with farmers to teach them on the job in our 'Farmer Field Schools. Here they learn improved agricultural techniques from seed to harvest such as taking cuttings, making fertiliser and replanting orchards.
