2003 - present
In 2003 Afghanaid transferred its head office from Peshawar to Kabul in response to the more stable situation inside the country after many years of civil war. It also began working as an implementing partner for the Transitional Administration’s National Solidarity Programme in several districts of Badakhshan, Samangan and Ghor provinces.
Afghanaid’s projects operated in 500 different rural communities in the provinces of Ghor, Badakhshan, Samangan and Nuristan, reaching approximately half a million Afghans. Projects focused on agricultural development, vocational training for women, children’s rights and the improvement of infrastructure to provide better market access.
A key initiative was the development of kitchen gardens to help those in the community (especially women) without their own land. New varieties of vegetables were introduced, providing greater food security and having a positive impact on nutritional standards. Those involved were trained in improved cultivation, food processing and storage techniques.
In 2005/2006 Afghanaid continued its commitment to support Afghanistan at the community level through the enhancement of economic and social development. This support was delivered through training and technical support services in the fields of agriculture, animal health care, women's vocational training and literacy, children's rights, community-level infrastructure (bridges, roads, micro-hydro power, etc.) and micro-finance in poor rural villages across four provinces.
In addition, Afghanaid expanded collaboration with a number of new partners, particularly Afghan ministries, including the Ministries of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), Education, Agriculture, and Women's Affairs. In several of Afghanaid's programmes, Afghan Ministries act as direct partners. Afghanaid is MRRD's direct partner in the National Solidarity Programme (NSP) and delivers new governance structures and poverty alleviation in 927 villages. Recently, Afghanaid has been appointed to a consultative group of donors and ministries to track achievements planned under the Afghan National Development Strategy (ANDS).
