Fundraising Advisory Committee

The Fundraising Advisory Committee is a standing committee that assists with the development and implementation of a strategy for raising funds in the UK for Afghanaid.

The Committee recommendations to the Board of Trustees in relation to a fundraising strategy and assist the Board of Trustees in the implementation of a strategy agreed by the Board of Trustees and relevant London Office fundraising staff.

Current members

Malcolm Harper (Chair) Malcolm has been involved with international aid and development for his whole career. He was on the staff of Oxfam for 18 years working in London, Oxford and Africa and then for 20 years with the United Nations Association in the UK. Malcolm is currently active with several NGOs as a trustee including Landmine Action (of which Afghanaid is a member).  Stephen has also been a member of the Afghanaid board of trustees since 2005.

Elizabeth Winter Elizabeth is a social scientist / researcher with many years of experience of managing NGOs both in the UK and in Pakistan / Afghanistan. As well as being a founder member of Afghanaid, Elizabeth was also a founder member of the British Agencies Afghanistan Group. Elizabeth is currently an active advocate on issues relating to Afghanistan as well as carrying out consultancies for the UN, DFID and other agencies concerned with Afghanistan's development. Elizabeth was a committee member for the Afghanaid Fashion Show 2009 and is a co-founder of Afghanaid.

Stephen Turner Stephen has 30 years experience working in International Development. He worked for VSO as Field Director and Regional Manager in a wide variety of countries as well as in senior positions in the UK. In the 90s Stephen joined WaterAid as part of their senior management team. Involved in planning the growth of WaterAid, increasing funding, developing HR systems, and managing three strategic planning processes.  He was also involved building WaterAid's advocacy and campaigning, including for the inclusion of sanitation as a target indicator in the Millennium Development Goals. Stephen is a member of the Afghanaid board of trustees.

Dr Karen Woo Dr Karen Woo, MBBS, MRCS Eng, was an Associate Medical Director, Bupa - Group Medical, where she led on clinical governance, hospital evaluation and quality improvement.  After an early career as a professional dancer, she went to medical school, qualified at UCL in 2003 and trained to be a surgeon. She worked with UCL wilderness medicine society, Imperial college surgical society, and with Women in Surgical Training (WIST). In March 2009, Karen directed the Afghanaid Fashion Show in 2009 in London.

Leslie Knott Leslie has worked as a journalist in Afghanistan on projects including setting up a radio station for women in Maimana, and teaching photography in rural Badakshan. Her photographs have been published in the Sunday Times,The Observer, Closer Magazine and the Independent. She recently finished a film on the Afghan Cricket team called Out of the Ashes.  Committee member for the Afghanaid Fashion Show 2009.

James Lesser Former Director, Resources Specialist Sales with investment bank Fairfax IS. Assisted Turquoise Mtn (TMF) in negotiating export agreements, completed proposals for and won GDA grants from USAID for smaller businesses and developed strategy for the structure of the private sector operations of TMF.  Held a four week internship at Grameen Bank, Daka/Chittagong Bangladesh, studying micro-finance. Climbed Kilimanjaro raising £12,000 for the British Heart Foundation, 2006.    

Denise Meredith A former trustee of Afghanaid, Denise Meredith is a graduate of history from Cambridge and has worked as a marketing consultant in cause based campaigns for clients like the Red Cross and WWF.Denise is currently working on her first novel.

Tim Wright A solicitor at Herbert Smith LLP, specializing in disputes litigation. After studying English literature at Nottingham University, spent time in Kabul as a paralegal with a small defence company involved in a commercial dispute over the use of a product by the military, UN and embassies in Afghanistan. During this time he explored the country, including taking a road trip to Mazar Sharif and the Uzbekistan border.  Subsequently studied Law at Cambridge University and attended Law School in London before starting present job.

Holly Ritchie Former Afghanaid staff member and consultant on development in Afghanistan. Holly has an MA in Development from Amsterdam; earlier experience with Folkes Asset Management in London. Currently Holly is a PHD Fellow in Development Studies at the Institute of Social Studies (The Hague) and an Independent Development Consultant working from Kabul.

Adele Bird Former Fundraising Manager for Afghanaid in London.  Adele has extensive charity recruitment experience as well as a wide range of experience fundraising.  She traveled to Afghanistan to visit Afghanaid's projects in 2007.

Yvonne Lane Former Afghanaid staff member, with experience in trust fundraising. Yvonne worked as Head of Fundraising for Anti-Slavery International and with Christian Aid as Co-Financing Officer and Fundraiser for Latin America and Caribbean. She now works as the Development Manager, Europe for Technoserve.

Fraser Mackay Fraser is a former UK Director of Afghanaid.  He has a wide range of experience of advocacy and fundraising as well as an in depth knowledge of Afghanaid's work. He currently works as Business Manager for Guy Chester Centre.

Georgia Crawford  Georgia joined as a committee member for the Afghanaid Fashion Show in 2009. She has wide range of knowledge on Pakistan having lived there for a number of years.

Caroline Mackinnon Caroline joined as a committee member for the Afghanaid Fashion Show in 2009.  Caroline works with schools in the UK.

 Members are appointed by invitation.
