International Women's Day - 8th March
On International Women's Day, 8 March 2010, women around the world will join on bridges to say no to war and yes to peace and women's development. Please give your support to the women who are building the bridges of hope.Today, women bear the main burdens of war and poverty. 70% of the world's poor are women and 75% of the civilians killed in war are women and children.
Ten years ago, the international community set a path for ending poverty by agreeing to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Women's and girls' equality is critical to the realisation of these goals. Greater investment in women and girls is needed so that they can rebuild their lives, families, communities and, ultimately, their nations.
