Jacob Sutton - Afghanistan

Jacob Sutton - Afghanistan

This collection comprises charcoal portraits of Afghan men, women and children living in Kabul and other parts of the country.

Artist Jacob Sutton spent three and a half years in Afghanistan, living in Kabul and travelling across the country to remote village towns like Herat, Kandahar and Mazar-i-Sharif where he met his participants. The portraits within this collection were drawn during the years 2004 and 2006.

Sutton's drawings eloquently capture the conflict surrounding his subjects. Displaced by war and living in terrible conditions, what Sutton captures within the charcoal layers, through shape, tone, line and contrast is the intesity of inidividual suffering.

This collection is in support of the National Museum of Afghanistan and in association with the British Museum.
