What is the situation in Afghanistan?

Cases of COVID-19 in Afghanistan are beginning to increase rapidly, creating grave implications for a country already struggling with deep seated poverty, long-running conflict and an extremely fragile health system.

Inadequate health facilities and a lack of basic services, including access to clean water and sanitation, are a serious problem in many areas across Afghanistan. These daily challenges are only magnified by the spread of COVID-19. Over half the population lives below the poverty line and the spread of the pandemic poses a serious threat to their ability to cope. Already the cost of basic essentials has increased dramatically and families living on the edge desperately need your help.

We are posting regular updates of the situation in Afghanistan here.

What are we doing?

Afghanaid is taking the necessary precautions to protect our staff and the communities we’re serving. We've delivered a variety of preparatory, containment and control activities in response to help remote communities across the country best protect themselves, and are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

Our teams on the ground are working hard to continue and adapt our work, using personal protective equipment to ensure their safety and that of the communities they're helping. We've been disseminating information and advice about Coronovirus, hygiene, hand washing and social distancing. This includes working with community elders and local government authorities, as well as local religious authorities to get health messages distributed as part of the Friday prayers.

We've set hand washing stations alongside our current work, provided safe jobs to locals who may have lost jobs due to the lockdown, and are monitoring the impact prolonged lock-down is having on already vulnerable communities.

What can you do?

There are two key ways you can help the people of Afghanistan:

1. Make a donation 2. Join our team of At Home Heroes

We're working incredibly hard to protect vulnerable communities in Afghanistan during this Coronavirus crisis. During challenging times, donations from our supporters are an absolutely vital resource for Afghanaid, and will help to ensure we can continue to reach those who need it most, and provide vital assistance to the most vulnerable. Any support you can give, no matter how small or large, is hugely appreciated at this difficult time.

How will your contribution help?

Your donations will provide important support for staff members on the ground and the communities we are helping.

For example, you could:

  • buy personal protection kits for staff so that they can continue to work;
  • buy thermometers to ensure those who are working are healthy and safe to do so;
  • cover the cost of setting up hand washing stations in remote areas;
  • enable our staff to spread information and advice to communities, mosques and local governments;
  • provide essential hygiene kits for families across the country;
  • buy men, women and children face masks and protective gloves so they can best protect themselves.
