This International Women's Day, stand with Afghan women tackling mounting hunger and get your donation DOUBLED.

In 2026, 17.4 million Afghans are expected to experience acute food insecurity, with women and their children bearing the brunt of the crisis. Two thirds of female headed households cannot afford a basic diet, and in the coming months 4.9 million women and children are projected to face severe malnutrition, as the country confronts the sharpest rise in child malnutrition rates ever recorded.

Afghanistan is already the hardest place in the world to be a woman. With limited resources, mobility, and little or no access to income, Afghan women face a deeply insecure future, and face unique risks in the face of Afghanistan's hunger crisis. Mothers often go without food so their children can eat, with mothers often eating least and the last, and those without male family members find it hardest to put food on the table.

Fed Today, Resilient Tomorrow

We recognise that whilst Afghan women often are amongst the hardest hit by hunger, they are also powerful change makers, at the heart of efforts to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition in their communities. When women are included and championed in food production and income generation, entire families benefit. This work goes far beyond providing food. It is about ensuring women have real access, real opportunities and the means to lead sustainable change.

At Afghanaid, we do this through:

  • Helping women like Zareen grow more food by providing the seeds, tools and practical support they need to succeed, particularly in the face of climate change;
  • Supporting women to learn skills and start small businesses, often in food production, so they can earn an income and afford a more diverse, nutritious diet;
  • Enabling women to become livestock farmers, with cows and goats providing families with a reliable source of milk and calcium;
  • Delivering nutrition training that equips families with the knowledge to stay healthy and well nourished;
  • Building safe water and sanitation facilities so communities can water crops, prepare food, stay hydrated and protect their health;
  • Supporting communities to adapt to climate change and reduce disaster risks, so floods and droughts do not destroy vital crops.

Lasting change cannot come from quick fixes, so these holistic approaches enable women to address malnutrition at its roots. Combined with emergency support, they help families put food on the table today while building the resilience to recover and thrive tomorrow.

This International Women’s Day, standing with Afghan women means investing in solutions that endure. And thanks to a generous major donor, the first £10,000 donated towards our appeal will be matched, meaning your gift can make twice the impact and support twice as many women.

Atifa's Story

When mother Atifa* enrolled on a dairy production course with Afghanaid, she forged a new path for her family, one that could lead from hunger to hope. Supplied with training and the tools to build her own small business, Atifa now produces nutritious dairy products for her children and sells them at market, earning a secure income.
