Nasrin* lives with her husband and their five children in a remote village of Samangan Province. With few economic opportunities available locally, her husband works as a daily labourer, sometimes finding work and sometimes returning home without income. This uncertainty made it difficult for the family to meet even their most basic needs, and managing daily life required constant care and resourcefulness.

Water was at the heart of keeping her home clean and her family healthy, and when it wasn’t close by, even the smallest tasks - from bathing the children to rinsing a cup - became a challenge.

“We often struggled to afford simple hygiene items like soap,” she said. “Many times, we relied only on unsafe water because even small things were beyond our means.”

After sharing her daily challenges with her community, they introduced her to the Afghanaid team, and she enrolled in the health and hygiene awareness sessions. There, she learned practical ways to keep her family more resilient to illness.

“The training helped me understand how small habits can protect our children,” she explained.

Her family also received a hygiene kit containing items that had previously been out of reach, allowing her to put her new knowledge into practice. At the same time, the village worked with Afghanaid to address the long‑standing water shortage. Families helped identify suitable locations for the wells and supported the installation of the new pipeline network.

“The struggle to access clean water has finally eased,” Nasrin added. “We no longer need to walk long distances to fetch it, and it has lifted a huge physical burden, especially for women and children.”

These changes have brought a visible shift across the community. With better access to clean and safe water, families are more resilient to waterborne diseases, able to keep their homes cleaner, and more comfortable discussing hygiene and health.
