On Sunday 4th October, our fantastic Team Afghanaid runners crossed the virtual finish line!

The 40th Race was set to be one to remember. As the race could not take place in its usual fashion, 3 of our fantastic Team Afghanaid runners - Richard, Derek, and Joompote - alongside 45,000 others took on the first ever virtual London Marathon, and did so in spectacular fashion.

Derek, who has run the marathon for Afghanaid before, ran alongside his running club on the big day. Joompote completed his 26.2 miles on the other side of the globe, in Thailand!

Richard (literally) went the extra mile, running an Ultra Marathon over 9 of Surrey’s biggest hills, covering 31 miles/50km with a climb over the route of over 1km, whilst using GPS Art to create the shape of a mouth via his route - making his run ‘The Surrey Hills Shout’.

I want to encourage people to Shout For Afghanistan- to spread the word about how Coronavirus is impacting vulnerable communities in Afghanistan and support a charity that ensures local voices are at the centre of shaping the future of the country.

Here's Richard finishing his Ultra Marathon:

You can still get involved and #ShoutForAfghanistan - here's some ideas of how you can join the fun!

  • Use the #ISupportTeamAfghanaid and #ShoutForAfghanistan hashtags on social media to let your followers know about our work and inspire others to fundraise for Afghanistan.
  • Take on a challenge yourself! Why not try 2.6 miles in honour of our runners, or perhaps take inspiration from our runners and join our 2021 squad...
