By Her Side: UK Aid Match explained

By Her Side is a special Afghanaid campaign backed by the UK government under its UK Aid Match initiative. Between 30th June and 30th September 2022, the UK Government will double your donations.

Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions below:

What is UK Aid Match and how long is Afghanaid's appeal running for?

Expand

UK Aid Match brings charities, the British public and the UK government together to collectively change lives and support people around the world. It is designed to allow the British public to have a say in how UK aid is spent and provide opportunities to engage with international issues, whilst boosting the impact of work like Afghanaid's.

For every £1 donated to a UK Aid Match charity appeal by an individual living in the UK, the UK government will also contribute £1 of UK aid - therefore doubling the donation - up to £2 million.

Afghanaid's By Her Side appeal will run for 3 months, from 30th June 2022 - 30th September 2022.

How will donations be matched and what does this mean?

Expand

Matched funding means that any donation made is matched, or doubled. In a UK Aid Match campaign, only donations made by individuals living in the UK will be eligible for matched funding, as the match funding comes from the UK government’s international development budget.

This means, all donations made by a UK citizen during the 3 month campaign period will be doubled by the UK government, up to £2 million.

  • getting involved with events and fundraising activities,
  • supporting our campaign actions, eg. sharing our animation online,
  • or raising awareness within your networks about the continuing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and the situation for women.

If you have an idea about how you’d like to get involved and you’d like to discuss this with a member of our team, please email [email protected] - we’d love to hear from you!

Can my company donate to the UK Aid Match appeal?

Expand

Financial donations from corporate donors are not eligible for the match funding. Your company can donate to the appeal but your contribution will not be doubled.

The following donations are also ineligible for UK Aid Match funding:

  1. Existing regular donations from current regular donors, as these form part of already guaranteed income, and have not been set-up in response to the match appeal.
  2. Gift Aid (although we can still claim Gift Aid on your donations, it just won’t be matched).
  3. Proceeds from compulsory tickets sales.

Is a regular gift eligible for match funding?

Expand

Regular giving from new donors who choose to sign up before 30th September will be match-funded for up to three payments. The UK government will match up to three regular payments received within the appeal period and up to the end of the grace period - 30th November.

No more than three direct debit payments will be eligible for matching - only two may be matched if the payment is set up towards the end of the appeal and the third instalment falls outside of the grace period. This is to account for the time lag between when the new regular giver signs up, and when their first payment is made.
